Sachem Skipper butterfly, one of the grass skippers - my favorite kind, because I love their miniature-fighter-jet wing positions! This one is posing prettily on a sweet potato leaf, a surprisingly cooperative little insect.

Heads or Tails?
Cross-striped Cabbageworm caterpillars on broccoli.
Maybe they're not speaking to each other. Or maybe it's a strategy for the species to survive predation: whichever end of the pair a predator latches onto, only one will lose its head! Or maybe it's just a coincidence that they're positioned head-to-tail like this...that's less fun to ponder, though!

Jersey Sunrise
The Jersey Shore is more than an appalling MTV show; it's a long stretch of sand and surf full of life and beauty. I captured this sunrise while looking for piping plovers at Corson's Inlet, Ocean City, NJ.

In the Pink
A Pink Spotted Lady Beetle (Coleomegilla maculata) harmonizes perfectly with the unopened bud of a tiger lily (Hemerocallis species).
